Five Star Fridays
“Hey guys, it’s been a while since I’ve posted one of these.
Truth told, I had to hop a plane to Europe at short notice to take the funeral of a beloved friend of mine. After flying from Los Angeles, to London, to Atlanta, Amsterdam, back to Wales, then London, and finally back to Los Angeles within two weeks, I think you can appreciate why I’ve been playing hooky with my writing
So, here we go:
Quotes I’m pondering: “If you’re not afraid, then you’re not on mission.”
That’s actually one of mine, but it went nuts on social media, both with those who agreed, disagreed, and didn’t care 😉
Books I’m Reading: I just finished “If I Had Lunch With C.S. Lewis” by Alistair McGrath. Holy cow! I can’t remember loving a book so much in a long time. It was incredibly insightful, and inspiring. Lewis biographer, McGrath summarizes what lunches on various topics with Lewis might sound like when the Oxford Don was cornered by probing questions. McGrath’s mastery of Lewis’s thought shows. You can check out the book HERE.
What I’m Contemplating: After doing completing my literary pilgrimage to Oxford and Stratford, I was inspired by the sheer amount of content that Tolkien turned out. LoTR was produced in 17 years, and if Tolkien hadn’t produced it at the Inklings gatherings, and received encouragement from Lewis, we’d never have seen it. Both men produced a huge amount of content, and I confess that today, I’ve recalibrated my life plan to complete a number of projects that have been on the back burner. If they could do it working at Oxford, then I can make the most of my free time to complete my meager projects too. I sat at the table in the Eagle and Child where these readings happened, and let’s just say that it was a holy moment.
What I’m Planning: I’m running my first ever cohort on Reaching the Unreached starting at the end of May. I’m excited to help people reach the unreached around them, and want to say thanks to all of you who signed up!
What I’m listening to: When Scott Hutchison committed suicide a few weeks ago, I confess that I didn’t know who Frightened Rabbit was. I’d never heard of them, but when I hear about somebody taking their life, I’m always saddened. We’ve lost 4 rock stars to suicide this past year alone, and it breaks my heart. There are so many in pain, that I’m trying to connect with it in his music now in order to understand. As a minister of the gospel, and a former psychiatric nurse, I’ve been blessed to be in a place to help people get help and receive healing. At other times, I’ve lost people very close to me who took their own lives. This year marks the 7th anniversary of one of my best friends taking his life. That said, there is a song that Hutchison wrote with a haunting lyric: “Aw, you’re acting so holy, me, I’m just full of holes”. I pray that when I’m around those that are hurting, that holiness brings hope, rather than despair. It seemed to with Jesus, and I still have hope that we’ll get the balance right, with His help.”
